We are delighted to announce that the Revd Dr Gemma Foster will be the next Archdeacon of Bournemouth, providing support for parishes across our diocese and with special responsibility for the deaneries of Bournemouth, Southampton, Christchurch, Lyndhurst, Romsey and Eastleigh.
Revd Gemma is currently Rector of Cove Parish in Farnborough in the Diocese of Guildford, Area Dean of Aldershot and she also serves on General Synod. She is passionate about mission and discipleship, and this passion shaped her PhD research where she explored how the Church can effectively disciple young adults in today’s world. She is married to J, and together they have three young children. Gemma is often found with a good coffee in her hand. She enjoys unwinding through a range of creative hobbies and finds these moments a space to rest, reflect, and be refreshed in God’s presence. She also has a love of good comedy and has even tried her hand at improvisational comedy!
Revd Gemma said: “My hopes and prayers for the role is that I quickly get to know the clergy and parishes of the archdeaconry. I’m very much looking forward to supporting parishes as they Walk the Wessex Way of loving, serving, learning and growing and what that means within the context of each parish.”

She brings with her excellent parish experience, real energy and commitment to the mission of the Church, as well as particular expertise in the discipleship of young people. I’ve no doubt she will be a real blessing not only to the south of this Diocese but to the whole diocesan family.”
The Rt Revd Paul Davies, Bishop of Dorking & Acting Bishop of Guildford, said: “Gemma is a very gifted leader. I’ve worked closely with her over the past seven years as Rector of Cove and Area Dean of Aldershot and have very much valued her strategic mind and pastoral heart. Her research into discipleship in young adults (for which she was recently awarded her PhD) has made a very significant contribution to the wider church in our country. Whilst I’m very sorry to see her leave the Diocese of Guildford, I’m delighted that she will bless CofE Winchester in a role in which I’m sure she will flourish. She goes with our love and prayers.”
