Villagers in Shalden have come together to install a memorial bench in the churchyard of St Peter & St Paul to remember Michael Campbell, a long-time resident who played a significant role in village, church and county life.
Michael lived in Shalden with his wife Linda and family for more than 40 years. He served on the PCC and played an important role in the formation of the Parish of Bentworth, Lasham and Shalden. He was an active supporter of Winchester Cathedral and a member of the Diocesan Synod. He also supported many local events, including the Shalden Garden Fete.
Funded by donations from villagers and friends, the bench was presented to Linda and her family at a gathering where residents raised a toast to Michael’s memory.
Peter Rankin, Churchwarden at St Peter & St Paul, said, “Because Shalden is a small village, we know one another personally and Michael was a big part of many people’s lives. He was a good friend and neighbour. We were delighted that so many people contributed towards the bench. It was a wonderful community effort and a fitting way to remember someone who gave so much to village life.”
The bench includes special engravings of Michael’s beloved vintage Bentley, affectionately known as ‘Delilah’ and his faithful Labrador, Sanna. The bench is already proving popular with walkers and visitors as it offers one of the best views of the surrounding countryside.
